CANDI BAHAL
Bahal temple located in the Village Bahal, District Alternating Padang, South Tapanuli, North Sumatra, which is about a 3 hour drive from Padangsidempuan. This temple is a temple complex (the local term called Biaro) the largest in the province of North Sumatra, because their area surrounding the temple complex Bahal I, Bahal Bahal II and III.
Candi Bahal is only part of the temples Padanglawas significant temples located in broad field that includes, among others: Pulo Temple, Temple Barumun, Singkilon Temple, Temple Sipamutung, Aloban Temple, Temple Rondaman Dolok, Bara Temple, Temple Magaledang , Temple and Temple Nagasaribu Sitopayan. Chances are, fields and villages around these temples was a vast desert. It is not known whether Bahal Temple is a Hindu temple or Buddhist temple. Given Bahal I temple roof that resembles the shape of the temple roof Barelang Mahligai in (Riau) allegedly Bahal temple is Buddhist temple. However, look at the stone statues found at the site, such as the makara head statue, Ganesha statues, giant, etc.., Estimated temple is a Hindu temple or Tantric Buddhism. Bahal temple complex consists of three temples, each separated by a distance of about 500 meters. A few kilometers from this temple complex there are other temples, the temple complex Barumun Pulo or being restored.
Bahal temple is often referred to as the Temple Portibi, according to the name of the area where the temple is located. In some ways, there are similarities between the temple Bahal I, II and III. The entire temple complex of three buildings made of red brick, except statues made of hard stone. Each temple complex is surrounded by a tall fence and about 1 m thick are also made of red brick arrangement. On the eastern side of the bay there is a gate and flanked on either side by a wall of about 60 cm tall. In each of the main building there is a temple complex located in the middle of the page with a right-facing entrance gate.

CANDI BAHAL
Candi Bahal berlokasi di Desa Bahal, Kecamatan Padang Bolak, Kabupaten Tapanuli Selatan, Sumatera Utara, yaitu sekitar 3 jam perjalanan dari Padangsidempuan. Candi ini merupakan kompleks candi (dalam istilah setempat disebut biaro) yang terluas di provinsi Sumatra Utara, karena arealnya melingkupi kompleks Candi Bahal I, Bahal II dan Bahal III.
Candi Bahal hanya merupakan bagian dari candi-candi Padanglawas yang berarti candi-candi yang terletak di padang luas yang mencakup, di antaranya: Candi Pulo, Candi Barumun, Candi Singkilon, Candi Sipamutung, Candi Aloban, Candi Rondaman Dolok, Candi Bara, Candi Magaledang, Candi Sitopayan dan Candi Nagasaribu. Kemungkinan, persawahan dan perkampungan di sekitar candi-candi tersebut tadinya merupakan padang yang sangat luas. Dari sekian banyak candi Padanglawas hanya Candi Bahal yang sudah selesai dienovasi, Candi Sipamutung dan candi Pulo sedang dalam proses renovasi, sedangkan candi lainnya masih berupa reruntuhannya.
Tidak diketahui apakah Candi Bahal merupakan candi Hindu atau Candi Buddha. Menilik atap Candi Bahal I yang mirip dengan bentuk atap Candi Mahligai di Muara Takus (Riau) diduga Candi Bahal merupakan Candi Buddha. Akan tetapi, melihat arca-arca batu yang ditemukan di tempat tersebut, seperti arca kepala makara, arca Ganesha, raksasa, dsb., diperkirakan Candi ini merupakan candi Hindu atau Buddha Tantrayana. Fungsi candi Bahal pada masa lalu juga belum diketahui dengan pasti, walaupun penduduk di sekitar menyebutnya "biaro" yang berarti biara.
Kompleks Candi Bahal terdiri dari tiga buah candi, yang masing-masing terpisah dengan jarak sekitar 500 meter. Beberapa kilometer dari candi ini ada pula kompleks candi lain, yaitu kompleks Candi Pulo atau Barumun yang tengah dipugar.
Candi Bahal seringkali disebut juga sebagai Candi Portibi, sesuai dengan sebutan untuk daerah tempat candi itu berada. Dalam beberapa hal, terdapat kesamaan di antara Candi Bahal I, II maupun III. Seluruh bangunan di ketiga kompleks candi dibuat dari bata merah, kecuali arca-arcanya yang terbuat dari batu keras. Masing-masing kompleks candi dikelilingi oleh pagar setinggi dan setebal sekitar 1 m yang juga terbuat dari susunan bata merah. Di sisi timur terdapat gerbang yang menjorok keluar dan di kanan-kirinya diapit oleh dinding setinggi sekitar 60 cm. Di setiap kompleks candi terdapat bangunan utama yang terletak di tengah halaman dengan pintu masuk tepat menghadap ke gerbang.
